Black Friday Michael Hodges Books

This might be Hodge's best book, so far. (It's a toss-up between this and THE PULLER).

What sets this sf/horror novel apart is that it's a slow-burn of a book. Hodges author sets up a compact cast of characters and he spends a lot of time carefully delineating each of them as he introduces them into the story. The setting for this novel of horrific mayhem is a prosperous shopping mall that is cast into a strange twilight world, trapping each of the main characters within the confines of the multi-tiered shopping center. Unlike many books that have used a similar setting, Hodges does not quite center all of the subtext on consumerism and the effects of that on modern society. Some of the characters are decidedly NOT much in the way of conspicuous consumers, and this lends a unique slant to the story.

There is some deft and stylistic work in this novel, with some genuinely creepy imagery.

Highly recommended.

Too many repeated lines.... Laura fingered her heart pendant, Patricia rubbed her left thigh and licked her lips, Chike asked 'Mind if I smoke?', Chike exhaled smoke to the ceiling.....it was so irritating. There was one for every character, Paul and his 'gosh', Jeff and his 'flyin pigs'. It was beyond cringeworthy. All the characters were one dimensional, despite his desperate attempts to give them personality with the aforementioned signature habit or phrase. Chike didnt feel like a 40 something year old, Jared didnt feel like a teenager. This author needs to work - hard - on his character development. The story is slow paced, halfway in and nothing has happened since the initial 'event'. There's a lot of references I didnt recognize (Arbys bangs? What?). Good story idea, just not impressed with the execution. Ending was dumb, anticlimactic, despite his trying to throw a twist in there - that didnt make any sense. This book was tough to suffer through.
I really don't know how to rate this book. I can't say it didn't have interesting characters. (I'd love a story with Chike and Jared in it.) I can't say that I didn't keep reading to see what would happen next and that is my main issue with this novel. Not much happened. It wasn't until the last few chapters that things started to picking up.
I feel as if this was a missed opportunity. I'd describe the story as wanting to be like Stephen King's The Mist but without anything happening other than the fog surrounding the mall. It could of been so much better.
I will read more by this author but this one in the end just wasn't for me.
it was ok
Very disappointing. Puller was OK; Invasive was Great; Black Friday was back to OK. Tons of dialogue. Minimal action. The most frustrating thing about this book was it's inability to be better given such a great premise. It's was mired in unnecessary dialogue produced to provide deep character histories. It went on and on and became boring. There was so much opportunity to increase the monster factor given the connection to a nearby scientific research facility. After loving Invasive so much I was sorely bummed out with this story. Not sure if I will continue to follow this author.
Don't hate me but I usually don't review books unless I love them or hate them. I don't know why, it's just how I am. This is MAYBE the second or third book that was somewhere in the middle.

As with most characters, you get to know them and you either like or dislike them. All characters, understandably, have a back story. I grew to accept and enjoy all the characters strengths and weaknesses except for one. Patricia! This character I just could not get behind and hope for the best for her. Not only was she selfish, but I started to dread when the author moved over to her part of the story. Everybody has triggers that obviously send them onto different memories or thoughts. Patricia's just seemed unimportant and seemed to drag on longer than all the others. I don't know. Maybe it just seemed like that to me because I didn't like her. The worst part about Patricia is that around the 56% mark of the book she pisses herself and shortly after vomits on herself. Ok, she was scared and that's all fine and good except that she never washed up and changed her clothes for the entirety of the book. NEVER! They're trapped in a mall after all, no reason why she couldn't have jumped in a fountain and change her clothes. Every time she hugged someone or got to close, I actually felt disgusted by her. Other than her, I did enjoy the book.
What a ride. No doubt this story will change the way you view Black Friday and Malls....forever.
Super intense read. Would make a great movie!
